The annual Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition is well underway with gold, silver and bronze medallists announced following the semi-final stage.
Over 400 sausages were judged over two days looking at aroma, texture and most importantly, taste.
The 22 gold medallist sausages from across 11 categories will go on to the final in Auckland on 14 October for one last taste, in the hopes of taking out the prestigious 2014 Supreme Award.
Kerry Tyack, Head Judge, says Kiwis can be well satisfied the quality of sausages they are buying continues to increase, as seen by all the judges in the early stages of the competition.
“This year we had more sausages scoring at the top level than ever before. Great combinations of flavours, lower fat and thoughtful use of seasoning means better sausages are available throughout the country,” says Tyack.
Prior to the final, a public tasting will be held at Auckland University of Technology to determine which gold medallist will win over the taste buds of Auckland locals and be named the 2014 People’s Choice Award winner.
This year marks the 21st year of the iconic competition, acknowledging the skill of New Zealand butchers and smallgoods manufacturers, while pointing the general public in the right direction for the best sausages this summer.
The competition is supported by Devro New Zealand, Kerry Ingredients and Alto Packaging.
