A tragic fire that disabled the kitchen at Auckland’s O’Connell Street Bistro at about 4am on January 27 will keep the restaurant closed for only four weeks, owner Chris Upton has told the press.
The kitchen sustained considerable fire damage and there is smoke damage to the dining room, which is amongst one of the most popular in Auckland with locals and international visitors.
But thanks to the fantastic efforts of the city’s firefighters in getting the blaze under control so quickly, it is expected the restaurant will be closed for only around four weeks while Upton and his team get the kitchen and restaurant back up to scratch.
The cause of the blaze is still being investigated. “Of course we are devastated by the fire,” says Upton, “O’Connell Street Bistro is our livelihood and we will do everything in our power to get the restaurant up and running again as soon as possible.
“We regret any inconvenience to our customers and we will be in touch with people who have made bookings during the weeks we are carrying out renovations.”
