A record crowd of 1,000 hotel industry professionals attended the 20th Anniversary HM Awards in Sydney on November 25, where outstanding people and properties across Australasia were recognised for their achievements.
The 2022 awards were hosted by Hospitality Business’ sister publication, HM magazine, and almost 50 categories were presented on the night to deserving winners across a range of categories, from people and departments to properties and chains.
Amongst the major awards presented at the event, Accor won Accommodation Chain of the Year, while InterContinental Hotels and Resorts and Ovolo Hotels won Hotel Brand of the Year.
On the property front, Cordis Auckland and Crown Towers Sydney were the winners of the Australasian Hotel of the Year category.
Cordis Auckland was awarded, Australasian Hotel of the Year, New Zealand Hotel of the Year, Human Resources Associate (in memorium for long standing Director of Human Resources at Cordis Auckland, Kimberly Ford), and was also awarded Highly Commended accolades for New Zealand Managing Director, Franz Mascarenhas and for their ‘Heart of It All’ Pinnacle Tower Marketing Campaign.
The HM Awards for Hotel and Accommodation Excellence are the leading industry awards in the region and celebrate the best properties, departments, people, chains and brands in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Each year, more than 1,500 nominations are assessed to determine the more than 40 category winners.
Managing Director of Cordis Auckland, Franz Mascarenhas, said he was humbled by the recognition Cordis Auckland has received and the phrase ‘one team one dream’ could not be truer on this occasion.
“It has been a tough year for the hospitality industry and all of us should celebrate this win together. These awards are a team effort and testament to the dedication and passion of everyone at Cordis Auckland. We wouldn’t have been awarded these without our team’s service excellence and willingness to deliver above and beyond for our guests every day, helping them to build great memories.”
These awards follow a number of other accolades the hotel has received this year after launching their stunning new Pinnacle Tower, taking Auckland’s hospitality offering to new heights.
“We have a healthy list of awards won this year, a silver lining in the midst of ongoing staff shortages and post-Covid challenges. We became EarthCheck ‘Masters’ certified to kick off the year for our commitment to sustainability and were one of only 15 hotels globally to receive this highest accolade. We were also named a Forbes Travel Guide Recommended Rating Hotel, the only hotel in New Zealand to be featured.”
Cordis Auckland was also named in the Top 10 Hotels in Australasia for the Condé Nast Traveler 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards and the Best New Zealand MICE Hotel at the 2022 World MICE Awards, alongside a raft of other accolades.
At the HM Awards, Cordis Auckland’s sister property, The Langham Gold Coast were winners of the New Hotel category and also Highly Commended in the Luxury Hotel, Resort and Hotel Interior Design categories.
Chief Executive Officer of Langham Hospitality Group, Brett Butcher was also inducted into the HM Awards Hall of Fame.
The major winners in the People Awards were The Ascott Limited’s David Mansfield, who won Australasian Hotelier, and Barry Robinson from Travel + Leisure, who was awarded Asia-Pacific Hotelier.
The 2022 HM Awards, a silent auction and a Sparkling Bar also helped to raise over A$10,000 for Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation.
“On behalf of the HM magazine team, I’m proud we have been able to recognise the leading people, departments, properties, chains and brands across Australasia in front of our largest ever audience,” said HM Awards Founder and Chief Judge, and HM magazine Editor-In-Chief, James Wilkinson.
“There is incredible talent in the accommodation industry in Australasia and so many received the recognition they most definitely deserved. Well done to everyone.”
