Calling all tapas kings and queens! The Australasia Tapas Competition is back for 2024 – and if you think you’ve got what it takes to whip up an award-winning tapas dish, now is the time to get your entry in.
Now in its sixth year, this fiery cook off is a calendar highlight for aspiring tapas chefs from both sides of the Tasman. Not only is it the perfect platform to showcase your culinary capabilities, but it could boost your industry profile, and cement your place as one of Australasia’s most talented tapas chefs.
“This is a competition that can catapult you onto the global stage – if you are hungry to make your mark in the industry it’s your golden ticket,” says Chef Jasbir Kaur, competition organiser and Head of Global Education Partnership and Business Development at Skills Group.
To be held at Ignite Skills state-of-the-art cookery school on August 27, this year’s event will see around 30 chefs from New Zealand and Australia pit their skills in front of a panel of esteemed judges – including industry heavyweights Peter Gordon, Sid Sahrawat and – for the third consecutive year – Simon Gault.
With just 25 minutes to prepare and present eight portions of innovative tapas the heat will be on, but it will be worth the blood, sweat and tears for one chef extraordinaire. As well as earning the prestigious title of 2024 Australasian Tapas Champion, the winner will secure an all-expenses paid trip to Valladolid, Spain, to compete in the iconic World Tapas Competition.
“This experience has been life changing for our previous winners,” says Chef Jasbir, who has herself participated in the global event, both as a competitor and a judge.
“Valladolid is the national and international capital of tapas – this is an unrivalled opportunity to learn from and compete against the very best tapas chefs in the world.”
