What is it all about?

The World Barista Championship organisation (WBC) has licensed the New Zealand Specialty Coffee Association (NZSCA) to run the New Zealand Barista Championships since 2008 and into the future. NZSCA is committed to running the event in close accordance with WBC standards. Our focus is on producing a field of finalists capable of competing successfully at an international level, and of course, a winner who can excel at the world finals.

We are searching for the best barista in New Zealand to compete against 60 other nations at the World Barista Championship 2019.

Each barista has 15 minutes to present their chosen coffee on specific machinery supplied by our sponsors. They are to produce four single shot espressos, four milk-based beverages and four signature beverages to four sensory (tasting) judges, two technical judges and a head judge.

Drinks and presentations are assessed on taste, cleanliness, creativity, technical skill, synergy, and overall presentation.

As in any competition, there are certain rules and regulations> to be followed.

Why would a barista enter?

Passion and a desire to evolve themselves in their chosen craft.

To improve their skills, increase their knowledge, encourage friendship and to network with other industry people.

To innovate and push the boundaries of coffee making.

To tell the story of the origins of the bean and respect the full journey of seed to cup and the people and processes involved.

To have the kudos of being able to make the most delicious coffee in the world and act as an ambassador for speciality coffee.
