400 hospitality & accommodation professionals attend #HNZ24 in Christchurch

#HNZ24, the Hospitality NZ conference, has kicked off in Ōtautahi Christchurch, with a range of key announcements and insightful sessions focused around the theme “Becoming the Industry of Choice.”

More than 400 hospitality and accommodation sector professionals from across New Zealand are in attendance at #HNZ24 – a two-day event at Te Pae Convention Centre.

#HNZ24 has brought together leaders and professionals from across the hospitality sector to discuss trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping the industry.

Hospitality NZ Chief Executive Steve Armitage, pictured above, and Hospitality NZ Board President Nick Keene set the scene for the major industry conference, emphasising the crucial role of hospitality in supporting local communities, creating strong social bonds, and driving economic growth.

Opening #HNZ24, Steve Armitage, Chief Executive of Hospitality NZ said: “Our industry is evolving, and with evolution comes the chance to innovate, improve, and ultimately succeed. By working together, leveraging our collective knowledge, and remaining committed to providing exceptional experiences, we will rebound.

“I firmly believe that the future holds much promise, and together, we will rise to meet it. Hospitality New Zealand will be doing all it can to ensure this.”

Industry-led Action Plan

A number of keynote speakers have taken to the stage, including Hon. Matt Doocey, the Minister for Tourism & Hospitality.

Minister Doocey emphasised the importance of the wider tourism and hospitality to New Zealand, and announced plans to work with the wider hospitality and accommodation sector on an industry-led plan of action.

The Minister has asked Hospitality NZ to coordinate a hospitality summit to understand the pressures the industry is facing, and what the industry needs from the Government to address those pressures.

Other sessions saw renowned futurist and global future of work expert Dr. Ben Hamer explored the evolving landscape of work, highlighting trends, technologies, and strategies that will shape the future of the hospitality and accommodation industry.

Named the number one thought leader for the future of work in the Asia-Pacific by Onalytica, Dr. Hamer offered insights to help businesses navigate and thrive in an ever-changing environment. He urged attendees to challenge the status quo, and remember that “just because we’ve done something one way doesn’t mean we need to keep doing it that way.”

Keynote Speakers

Esteemed chef and mental health advocate Tim Read – who first came to the attention of the nation in 2015 when he won MasterChef New Zealand – presented a compelling keynote on the importance of well-being in the hospitality and accommodation industry. He delved deep into how cooking and sharing meals can enhance mental health and foster a supportive, thriving community.

Experienced economist Shamubeel Eaqub provided a comprehensive overview of the economic landscape affecting New Zealand’s hospitality and accommodation sector, noting that “hospitality is the weather vane of the economy – we ride the ups and downs. Recessions hurt, and there are some difficult times still to come, but we will experience a recovery.”

Steve Armitage says the first day of #HNZ24 gave plenty of food for thought for attendees.

“We’ve looked at the short-term outlook for our industry, identified opportunities for growth, and discussed plans and initiatives to navigate through the current environment. Some of the discussions have been challenging, but we have also taken the time to celebrate our success, and set our focus on the future.”
